You can't miss the colorful storefront of The Venice Cafe at the corner of Lemp and Pestalozzi streets near the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Nor should you miss the sharp and savory flavors of the cafe's Caribbean cuisine. Every inch of the small eatery is cluttered with funky, flea market art, dolls, tile mosaics and other knick knacks. Outside is a courtyard bedecked with faux Roman columns and a garden filled with lush greenery. The brightly colored, tropical-inspired décor is mirrored in simple dishes served on paper plates with plastic forks. Entrées include Jamaican jerk chicken served with sweet dumplings and fried plantains, or Rasta Kabobs (three skewers of either chicken, veggies, beef or shrimp) served with grilled pineapple and coconut. Sides include mango slaw, falafel, dumplings and plantains. Try the mango fried pie for dessert. Six nights a week, the café hosts an eclectic mix of swing, reggae, blues, country and rock bands, so expect the small space to fill up fast with music fans. Full bar. Cash only. Serving dinner Mon–Sat. Closed Sun.
