In the shadow of (but not overshadowed by) St. Louis-based industry leader Anheuser-Busch, Schlafly Tap Room stakes claim as the first brewpub in Missouri. Opened in 1991, the Tap Room is full of quintessential old-school pub charm. The turn-of-the-century building once housed a printing press and now features three well-worn wooden bars attended by beer aficionados of all walks, from college students to retirees. The Tap Room's flagship beer is the amber Pale Ale, but other regularly offered brews include an American lager, an oatmeal stout, a pilsner and a hefeweizen. Schlafly's menu goes above and beyond standard bar food. For starters, try the house-baked pretzel sticks with white cheddar dipping sauce. Entrées include global classics such as wiener schnitzel, stuffed pasta shells, and a steak and mushroom pie topped with a pastry puff or beer biscuits. Superlative burgers, grilled yellow fish or salmon sandwiches can be paired with award-winning fries, sautéed seasonal veggies or grilled asparagus. Try house-specialty desserts such as sticky toffee pudding or oatmeal stout ice cream. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Late night Fri–Sat. Voted Best Brewpub in the 2009 Riverfront Times critics' poll.
