Modesto brings a bit of Spanish cuisine and culture to St. Louis' traditionally Italian-American neighborhood, The Hill. The restaurant boasts that it's one of the few exclusively Spanish operations in the area: All wine and cheeses are imported from Spain, and the menu's Spanish tapas-dominated offerings combine with bold Spanish architecture and interior. Two dozen or so tapas choices are offered to mix and match, but much-recommended paella and a short list of dinner entrées (try the filete de Solomillo) are also offered. Diners can easily construct an entire meal with powerfully flavored tapas such as: jamón y melon, which is cantaloupe draped with paper-thin serrano ham, similar to Italian prosciutto; gambas al Modesto (shrimp with garlic); buñuelos de bacalao, which are silver dollar-sized cod cakes with saffron oil; langosta frita, which is a deep-fried lobster tail; queso de cabra y champiñones al horno, which is a spicy tomato, mushroom and goat-cheese dip for toasted bread; brochetas de solomillo, which is beef kebabs with crumbles of Idiazábal cheese; and salpicon de mariscos, which is a seafood cocktail of squid, shrimp, monk fish and lump crab. From the full bar, specialty coffee drinks such as café solo (espresso), cappuccino or carajillo (espresso with Spanish brandy) are standouts, as is the sangria by the glass or pitcher.
