Calcutta native Harinder Singh brings the authentic flavors of northern and southern India to St. Louis with his restaurant, Rasoi. Although the restaurant is sparsely decorated, gracious servers make for an inviting environment. A bargain-priced daily lunch buffet is offered, or you can order à la carte. Start with some samosas or pakoras (slices of vegetables and cheese dipped in garbanzo bean batter and deep fried). Entrée specialties are prepared in two popular Indian cooking styles: tandoori (meat, poultry, fish and kabobs skewered and grilled over coal in a clay oven) and balti (marinated meat and vegetables quickly cooked over a high flame in a metal bowl shaped like a wok). Try a side of raita – whipped yogurt blended with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, carrots and mint – to cool and balance the spiciness of these dishes. Pair your meal with authentic Indian beverages such as freshly brewed masala chai tea or a mango and strawberry lassi, a refreshing yogurt drink served sweet or sour. Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Closed between meals.
