Veteran restaurateur David Mao strikes another Triangle hit with his Duck & Dumpling, evident in the string of excellent reviews (including a cameo in Southern Living) that have followed its 2002 opening. The fusion of Chinese and Vietnamese cooking with a French flair is a tribute to Mao's heritage, and the contemporary décor brings an added element of urban chic to the Moore Square area in historic downtown Raleigh. Dramatic red lighting, a black-clad waitstaff, a mirrored mahogany bar and rather loud piped-in jazz contribute to the exciting vibe that permeates the D&D. But don't get lost in the chic glow: You'll want a clear head when trying to determine which of the nearly 50 wines to order, or which snazzy martini you'd like. Hot and sour soup addicts shouldn't miss this house specialty, and the half-fried pork dumplings are the restaurant's most popular item. When choosing between other "small plates and small bowls" and "large plates and large bowls," know that there are a few tried and true. The lemongrass pork and the Vietnamese spring rolls are always crowd pleasers. The brown sauce in the stir-fried Filet Mignon Chinois is delicious, as is the ginger-tinged oyster sauce of the poached sea scallops. The flan is a sweet worth saving room for. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner Tue–Sat. Bar open until midnight Mon–Thu, until 1 am Fri and Sat. Closed Sun.

The Triangle region of North Carolina has become the epicenter of what national food magazines have dubbed the New Southern movement, perhaps best exemplified by the shrimp and grits popularized at Crook's Corner.
