Australian sisters Sarah and Jessica Holliday opened Staccato Gelato in 2003 in the Laurelhurst area to instant success. An orange exterior and polka-dotted walls signal fun, as does a magical mirror in the bathroom that slims you down. A kids corner comes complete with pint-sized tables and a chalkboard wall, while padded benches make for good study spaces for students. A rotating lineup of 12 dense and colorful gelatos, packed in square tins under glass, changes frequently. Winning flavors can include vanilla, rhubarb, mint chocolate chip, chocolate orange, coconut, banana, grapefruit, pistachio, hazelnut, tiramisu, honey-lavender, mango, pineapple, strawberry, raspberry, Marionberry and brown sugar pecan. Weekend cake doughnuts and fresh coffee anytime are also big hits with locals. Try the Prince of Darkness or the Fairy Princess doughnuts with a strong Segafredo Zanetti-brand espresso. Hot chocolate, hot tea and Oregon chai are also available to complement other donut flavors such as pumpkin spice and applesauce. No alcohol available. Cash or check only. Serving during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours Tue–Sun. Closed Mon.
