Be it bun, loaf or baguette, sourdough, focaccia or pumpernickel, Amy Scherber has made many a New Yorker's six to 11 servings a day all the more enjoyable since opening her Hell's Kitchen shop in 1992 with just five employees. Now with two additional retail stores (Chelsea Market and Greenwich Village), a staff of over 100, and more than 200 wholesale deliveries daily, her citywide operation is much more equipped to fill the demand for such delights as prosciutto and black pepper bread, raisin walnut, or semolina with raisins and fennel. In addition to whole-grain goodness, Amy's offers an array of excellent sandwiches, decadent pastries and some of the city's best cupcakes. No alcohol available. Serving during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours daily. Check individual stores for specific hours.

Top 100 Restaurant, New York City

"We're proud to use the best ingredients we can buy: unbleached, unbromated flours, organic whole grains and seeds, imported olives, fresh herbs, and fresh butter in our sweets. Our breads are made with care using traditional European methods. We're very proud of our work and hope you enjoy the products of our labor: GOOD BREAD!"

– Amy's Bread website

"Amy Scherber makes and sells some of the best bread in New York ... [and] some excellent and creative sandwiches."
The New York Times

"I am awed by the range of her breads: country sourdough, semolina raisin fennel, picholine green-olive bread, double-seeded organic whole wheat baguette, and on and on. There are big breads and small, round breads and flat, organic whole wheat walnut mini breads, rosemary mini-breads, ciabatta sandwich rolls, semolina black sesame twist, organic whole wheat oat pecan and golden raisin rolls."
Delta Sky magazine

"[Amy's Bread] supplies more than 100 restaurants and stores with their daily bread. Not that the growth has killed any of the charm; if we didn't know better, we'd think the master was still ... baking it all herself."

Celebrity chefs and gourmet restaurants abound in the Big Apple, but New York-style hot dogs and pizza will never go out of style, nor will the steaks from timeless Brooklyn-institution Peter Luger.
