Opened by Prince's Hot Chicken Shack disciple Aqui Simpson in 2006, North Nashville's 400 Degrees heads for the deep fryer rather than the skillet á la Prince's to prepare its peppery hot chicken, wings and pork chops. The results ultimately are the same. This stuff is very hot. And very good, with 400 Degrees finishing just behind the legendary Prince's in recent area competitions. The restaurant's name derives from the level of heat: 100 degrees for mild, 200 for medium and 400 for potentially pain-inducing. (For the uninitiated, order one level lower than your instincts might tell you. And keep those fingers away from your eyes!) Sides can vary but often include sweet baked beans, home-style green beans, and mac and cheese, with citrus-spiked sweet tea the beverage of choice. Since only two tables are available for dining, most orders are to-go. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon.
