Vietnamese restaurants in Nashville are few in number, but one of the first ranks as the best. Kien Giang opened more than a decade ago and has maintained if not improved its quality after an ownership change or two and a winter 2009 renovation. Want proof? You're likely to find many of Nashville's top chefs dining there for lunch or on their nights off. Situated just up a short drive off Charlotte Avenue in a nondescript building in an equally nondescript strip mall, Kien Giang serves top-quality, bargain-priced Vietnamese specialties such as omelet-like shrimp- and vegetable-filled pancakes; spicy pork, beef, chicken and seafood rice dishes (they'll make it just as hot or as mild as you want it); heaping bowls of noodles; terrific (and cheap!) bánh mì sandwiches; and fresh spring rolls so massive you may want to take one home for lunch the next day. Cash only. A limited selection of bottled beer available. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sun. Closed Mon.
