The margarita menu might be what pulls thirsty Midtowners through the door of venerable Molly's La Casita on Madison Avenue, but they stick around for the platters of spicy, cheesy enchiladas, the smooth and creamy refried beans, and the bottomless nacho plates that come out of the cocina like clockwork. Molly's – originally run by a second-generation immigrant named Molly Gonzales – is one of Memphis' most beloved institutions, with origins dating back to her father, Jessie Garcia, and his circa-1930s Beale Street café. The current incarnation of Molly's was established by Robert Chapman some 50 years later, and the recipes reflect a Southern gringo-meets-Mexico influence. The chile gravy, a topper for the tamales, is a spicier version of breakfast sawmill gravy, while the Mexican hot wings add a sure-fire kick to the Southern grilling standard. Be sure to order a bowl of the seven-layer dip or Molly's signature guacamole, which includes diced red onions and red pepper. Don't bother dressing up, because Molly's is strictly a casual place, perfect for families or getting-to-know-you first dates. It's also a popular hangout for musicians recording next door at Ardent Studios, so keep your eyes peeled for White Stripes and The Raconteurs front man Jack White, rock icon Bob Dylan, or the bearded members of ZZ Top. Play it cool, though – these superstars prefer anonymity, especially when they're chowing down on a chicken flauta or sizzling fajita plate. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
