With its gaudy, yellow, stucco exterior, Cuba Libre Cafe is hard to miss. Located in the heart of the totally trendy Henderson Avenue entertainment district, the quirky, two-story building ranks as one of the hippest gathering spots in Dallas. Booths promote intimacy among groups of chattering friends surrounded by brightly colored furnishings and technicolor murals, and an informal waitstaff could just as easily join your table as take your order. Cuba Libre's menu fuses classic South American cuisine with the sweet and hot contrasts of the Caribbean: From quesadillas and pizzas to taco platters and sandwiches, entrées are creative and accompanied by delightful, tangy, sweet sauces, dirty rice and plenty of black beans. House specialties include pepper- and salt-rubbed filet medallions, grilled mahi mahi over pineapple-shrimp fried rice, and lobster and shrimp tamales. On warm summer evenings, drinking cocktails on the outdoor patios invokes steamy Havana nights, particularly when the Latin beats start thumping upstairs. Featured drinks include the Cuba Libre (rum, cola and lime juice), some of Dallas' best mojitos and several choice margaritas. A small wine list includes pleasing options, as well. The full menu is available through 1:45 am. Serving lunch, dinner and late-night daily.
