In 2004, owner Samir Majmudar overhauled his popular Bombay Bistro and reopened it as Rani Indian Bistro, a more upscale place serving a different style of Indian cuisine. Rani focuses on Hyderabadi cuisine, which brings the foods of the North and the South together in spicy fusion. Rani's dining room has a quiet, almost serene feeling to it, and the décor is warm with deep reddish-orange walls, flowers on the tables, and pretty wall hangings. They recently obtained a full liquor license and serve a variety of tropical-themed cocktails along with nashta–Indian bar snacks–at the bar. There is plenty from which to choose on Rani's menu, from elaborate rice dishes to meats simmered in savory sauces. The appetizer menu offers a wide selection of chaat, the Indian street food that tosses crispy wheat chips with different combinations of ingredients, such as soft potatoes and chickpeas with sweet-bitter tamarind and tangy-cool yogurt sauce. The murg masalam is a classic Hyderabadi dish: roast chicken with a complex, savory sauce. The biryani rice dishes are elaborate and lovely, as are the dosas, which are crepe-like pancakes wrapped around different fillings. There are also the more familiar Indian dishes chicken tikka, meats and breads from the tandoor oven, lamb curry, and chicken vindaloo. To finish, try the kulfi, a cardamom-flavored ice cream, or the milk dumplings with rosewater syrup. Full bar. Open for lunch buffet 11:30 am-3 pm and dinner daily. Sunday brunch buffet noon-3 pm.
