From its exterior, The Corner Stable looks like little more than an old boathouse, with worn wood shingles and paneling. The only hints that this is, in fact, one of Baltimore's best-known restaurants are the plain letters stretched across the roof that read "Baltimore's Best Ribs." Plenty of media surveys over the years have agreed. The crab cakes aren't too shabby, either – the oversized versions of this Maryland staple are the secret recipe of co-owner Randy Reed, who purchased the place three years ago, along with Chip Reed and Joe and Jay Stonik. The foursome has primarily focused on making the place more family friendly, with better lighting, renovated restrooms and expanded soup and salad options. They also designated a non-smoking area. But despite the face-lift, the mood of the Stable, a city fave since its opening in 1972, remains as aw-shucks casual as ever, with outgoing servers and unpretentious tableware. In addition to the slow-cooked baby back ribs, entrées include barbecued pork shoulder, crispy "broasted" chicken, fish and chips, and shrimp. Sandwich options range from a light tuna salad or BLT to an overstuffed Philly cheese steak or Monte Cristo. Crab cakes pop up in most sections of the menu: plopped atop a salad, on a sandwich, or on massive combo plate with ribs. Sides are your standard barbecue fare, including coleslaw, baked beans and fries. Kid's menu available. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
