Fat Matt's Rib Shack is almost as popular a blues music venue as it is a barbecue joint, where locals line up out the door for their turns to order at the counter before choosing a seat at the yellow wooden benches outside or the long communal tables inside. The restaurant's casual atmosphere inspires its motto: "If you must wear a tie, at least loosen the knot before entering." Black-and-white checked floors and bright red walls help set the Southern barbecue mood almost as much as the menu does – half or full slab of pork ribs, half or quarter of a chicken, and chopped pork shoulder sandwiches. Sides include more than your typical three of coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans: Fat Matt's serves up potato chips, roasted peanuts and meaty Brunswick stew, as well. For dessert, try a slice of pecan or sweet potato pie. And if you just can't get enough, adjoining the restaurant is Fat Matt's Chicken Shack, specializing in fried chicken, catfish and hot wings. Live blues music nightly. (No cover charge, but don't forget the band's tip jar.) Beer available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Late-night weekends.
